SOW Training Sabers

S.O.W. Training Sabers

DOWNLOAD NOW

Andrew and I have created some Training sabers that do varying degrees of less damage than a normal saber. There are three main sabers in this pack they are; a saber that does one half damage (blue saber), one that does one fifth damage (green saber), and one that does one tenth damage (yellow one).

All members of SoW should download this small pack and put it in their base folder. These sabers will be useful for practicing/teaching many of the tools on the tool list one on one with instructors without having to heal constantly or worrying about killing each other.

The hilts of the sabers are color coded so that you can easily identify what saber a person is using even if the saber is off for convenience, and so you can remind them to change to the appropriate one for training or if you will be actually sparring.

There is also a "ninja dagger" in this pack it is a very short bladed saber which is difficult to wield but does more damage than a standard saber it is experimental at the moment and is subject to removal or change depending on how it performs in the wild.

Updates to the School of War

ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO READ THE FOLLOWING ANNOUNCEMENT IN ITS ENTIRETY.

Following a meeting of the Artists, the Board of Education has authorized a number of improvements to the standard operating procedures at the School of War. Effective August 1, 2010, the following changes to the School will be implemented:

Group Training Classes
Every weekend, an Artisan or authorized Artist instructor(s) will hold large group classes to cover specific areas of the tool list as well as expand upon certain concepts not explicitly covered by the standard toolset. Classes will be designed to run for one hour or less. Attending these classes is mandatory for all Students. In the week prior to each class, the instructor will post class information and attendance threads that can be used by students to prepare for the upcoming topic as well as report if they will be unable to attend the class. Excused absenses are permitted, but multiple unexcused absenses from classes may result in disciplinary action. Our intent is not to be overbearing, but merely to make sure that everyone is receiving the proper amount of instruction and that the instructors who volunteer their time and effort will not be wasting it. We will not take any disciplinary action against anyone without an appropriate amount of investigation to rule out legitimate reasons for missing classes. At the conclusion of group classes, the instructor may post a followup thread for thoughts and discussion; everyone who attended the class is encouraged to post in these followup threads both to demonstrate that you did indeed learn something and to give the instructors valuable feedback that can be used to improve future lessons.

Flexibility

Flexibility is the range of motion possible around a specific joint during momentary effort. In other words flexibility is not a constant characteristic in anyone; being flexible in the upper body does not imply there is flexibility in the lower body.

Types of Flexibility/Stretching
Ballistic – this is a very old method of stretching that had pretty much been abandoned because of safety issues related to its bouncing movements.

Static-passive – this is what most people consider flexibility to be. Static-passive flexibility is the ability to hold and maintain an extended position by using your weight, the support of other limbs or equipment such as a bar. Being able to do the splits is static-passive flexibility.

Dynamic – the ability to use a dynamic movement to bring a limb through its full range of motion. For example, to perform a high kick you use dynamic flexibility.

Static-active – this type of flexibility is the hardest to attain. It requires static-passive flexibility to assume an extended position but also the strength to hold and maintain it without assistance. Being able to raise and hold the leg at the height of the high kick is a good example of this type of flexibility.

Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) – this technique has long been used in physiotherapy and has been found to benefit passive stretching for flexibility and performance in gymnasts. Most of these stretches require a partner (usually a trainer or physiotherapist who knows how to not force the stretch and cause injury) to provide resistance to the stretch.

"You're looking for the [Samurai]?" said the girl sitting in the hallway. "They're up there."

She pointed up a staircase to a small gym on the top floor of Jan Hus Church on East 74th Street. Inside was a startlingly surreal scene, especially to someone stepping off the streets of the Upper East Side, where people were picking up dry cleaning and lounging at sidewalk cafes on a Saturday evening.

Upstairs, the old church gym resembled an ancient Japanese battleground. Some 50 people in Japanese warrior dress — dark robes, heavy chest armor and helmets with fearsome face-cages — hurled bloodcurdling screams as they beat one another over the head with poles.

Samurai Mind Training for Modern American Warriors

Not long ago at Fort Bragg, N.C., the country's largest military base, seven soldiers sat in a semi-circle, lights dimmed, eyes closed, two fingertips lightly pressed beneath their belly buttons to activate their "core." Electronic music thumped as the soldiers tried to silence their thoughts, the key to Warrior Mind Training, a form of meditation slowly making inroads on military bases across the country. "This is mental push-ups," Sarah Ernst told the weekly class she leads for soldiers at Fort Bragg. "There's a certain burn. It's a workout."
Think military and you think macho, not meditation, but that's about to change now that the Army intends to train its 1.1 million soldiers in the art of mental toughness. The Defense Department hopes that giving soldiers tools to fend off mental stress will toughen its troops at war and at home. It's the first time mental combat is being mandated on a large scale, but a few thousand soldiers who have participated in a voluntary program called Warrior Mind Training have already gotten a taste of how strengthening the mind is way different — dare we say harder? — than pounding out the push-ups.
See pictures of ninja warriors.
Warrior Mind Training is the brainchild of Ernst and two friends, who were teaching meditation and mind-training in California. In 2005, a Marine attended a class in San Diego and suggested expanding onto military bases. Ernst and her colleagues researched the military mindset, consulting with veterans who had practiced meditation on the battlefield and back home. She also delved into the science behind mind training to analyze how meditation tactics could help treat — and maybe even help prevent — post-traumatic stress disorder.
Rooted in the ancient Samurai code of self-discipline, Warrior Mind Training draws on the image of the mythic Japanese fighter, an elite swordsman who honed his battle skills along with his mental precision. The premise? Razor-sharp attention plus razor-sharp marksmanship equals fearsome warrior.
Read about the samurai version of king Lear

The Samurai image was selected after careful deliberation; it was certifiably anti-sissy. "We took a long time to decide how we were going to package this," says Ernst, who moved to North Carolina in 2006 and teaches classes at Fort Bragg as well as Camp Lejeune, a Marine base near the coast. "There are a lot of ways you could describe the benefits of doing mind training and meditation. Maybe from a civilian approach we would emphasize cultivating happiness or peace. But that's not generally what a young soldier is interested in. They want to become the best warrior they can be."

Student Etiquette

This is a reminder to all Students of the School of War about proper etiquette while in attendance at the School server. Specifically, this addresses appropriate usage of admin teleport privileges.

Teleport is used to forcibly remove guests from a room in private use, to bring guests into a room when they are permitted but unable to easily enter, to move another individual across long distances at their request if they are unable to teleport themselves, and to teleport oneself in order to reach the admin key which will permit authorization to bypass any locked door. Any other use of teleportation is unnecessary and may be considered an abuse of the privilege bestowed upon you.

'Starving yogi' astounds Indian scientists

Monday, May 10 12:14 pm

An 83-year-old Indian holy man who says he has spent seven decades without food or water has astounded a team of military doctors who studied him during a two-week observation period. Prahlad Jani says he was blessed by a goddess, which gave him special powers. For 15 days, Jani neither ate nor drank and did not go to the toilet.

Prahlad Jani spent a fortnight in a hospital in the western India state of Gujarat under constant surveillance from a team of 30 medics equipped with cameras and closed circuit television.

During the period, he neither ate nor drank and did not go to the toilet.

"We still do not know how he survives," neurologist Sudhir Shah told reporters after the end of the experiment. "It is still a mystery what kind of phenomenon this is."

The long-haired and bearded yogi was sealed in a hospital in the city of Ahmedabad in a study initiated by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the state defence and military research institute.

The DRDO hopes that the findings, set to be released in greater detail in several months, could help soldiers survive without food and drink, assist astronauts or even save the lives of people trapped in natural disasters.

"(Jani's) only contact with any kind of fluid was during gargling and bathing periodically during the period," G. Ilavazahagan, director of India's Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), said in a statement.

Jani has since returned to his village near Ambaji in northern Gujarat where he will resume his routine of yoga and meditation. He says that he was blessed by a goddess at a young age, which gave him special powers.

During the 15-day observation, which ended on Thursday, the doctors took scans of Jani's organs, brain, and blood vessels, as well as doing tests on his heart, lungs and memory capacity.

"The reports were all in the pre-determined safety range through the observation period," Shah told reporters at a press conference last week.

Other results from DNA analysis, molecular biological studies and tests on his hormones, enzymes, energy metabolism and genes will take months to come through.

"If Jani does not derive energy from food and water, he must be doing that from energy sources around him, sunlight being one," said Shah.

"As medical practitioners we cannot shut our eyes to possibilities, to a source of energy other than calories."
"Be strong, be gentle, be beautiful"
~ Keiko Fukuda

Keiko Fukuda was born on April 12 1913 in Tokyo. She began training in Judo in 1935, aged 21, and studied under Jigoro Kano; the founder of judo. Kano invited her to join the school - known as the Kodokan - because of her martial arts heritage, her grandfather (Fukuda Hachinosuke) was a jujitsu master who had taught jujitsu to Kano. Fukuda Sensei is the highest-ranking female practitioner of judo in the world and Kano’s last living student. She is renowned for her expertise in judo kata. She still teaches 3 nights a week at her school in San Fransico, coming onto the mat if students struggle with a technique.
In 1951 she reached the highest level then allowed for a female practitioner of judo; 5th dan. Two years later (1953) she traveled to the United States at the invitation of a judo club in Oakland. She stayed there for almost two years.

Fukuda is part of a kata demonstration at the 1964 summer Olympics in Tokyo. In 1966 she returned to the United States to give seminars in California. One of her demonstrations was at Mills College, the school offered her a job teaching judo. She taught there for over a decade.

In 1973 Fukuda releases her first book; “Born for the Mat: A Kodokan Kata Textbook for Women.” In the preface she writes – “Recently many women Judoists, most of them with several years of Judo training, began to come to Japan - the Mecca of Judo - for further study at the KODOKAN. Although they could do some Randori, there were many who had not acquired thorough knowledge of the basic Kata (Forms of Judo). In Judo, Randori and Kata are both of equal importance and both are essential to all Judoists. In Kata, one studies the theories and concepts of defense and attack and, therefore, acquires actual knowledge of The methods of self- defense.” You can read some more here. 1973 was also the year that she moved her school to its current location in San Fransico.
In 2001 the US Judo Federation recognised Fukuda as 9th dan, for lifelong contributions - domestic and international - to the martial art. Only three red belts have been awarded, the other two recipients were men. Four years later Fukuda released another book; “Ju-No-Kata: A Kodokan Textbook.” It is a pictorial textbook guide to performing the Ju no Kata which is one of the seven Kodokan Kata. In 2006, after 30 years at the level of 5th dan in the Kodokan system and aged 93, the Kodokan Judo Institute also awarded her the 9th dan level. She is the only woman to ever hold this high a rank from any recognized judo organization.

Changes To The Announcement Of Change

UPDATED

Greetings, Students

The board has made several changes. The enrollment of new students has been put to a temporary stop. Reason being is we have to filter through the current students and catch them up with some training, and remove ones who are here for the wrong reasons.

If a person asks about the school, they can be informed of the school and the website and explain to them that although enrollment is currently closed they should frequent the server and learn about the school, and they should be respectful and show that they have an understanding of what this place is about and that they have an interest in training.

Their actions and attitude during this time is building their resume for when enrollment opens back up, if you have shown us that you are the right material for this place you will be accepted as soon as the registration opens.

The new structure of the school is as followed.

Student+
Artist+ Artisan+

The apprentice title has been removed and merged with the students.

artists and students may teach each other but a tool is not to be officially checked off of the tool list until it has been cleared as learned in full by an artisan.

Students and artist should stick to training each other in tool that are of their current level on the tool list, but may not move on to new or more advanced material and lessons until they have been cleared to do so by an artisan.

this will open up the training so that people are always learning here at all times, but at the same time ensure consistency in the training.

Conduct
----
In our home map (FFA3) the Artist Office is to be a place of utmost respect and honor. Just like the Hall of honor is on the Dojo map.
- When you enter you should bow before you enter the room.
- Bow before you interact with the map, for training or sparring.
- If you are going to be in the room train or discuss by the fire or observe training (if there is no training or events going on then you may have respectful spars in this area) nothing else should be going on unless an event is going to be conducted.

----
the following are also encouraged
----
- Bow before you begin training on the pole
- Bow when you have finished training on the pole
- Clean up the dead, bow with respect and clean the field
- Respect and Honor

------
Trials
------
We will be posting a new section on trials.
We are going to have periodic trials for students, to check in on their training.

-----
Also the enrollment section will be updated once we figure out everything.
We are working on an Essentials Download pack for new students and will be adding a teamspeak download.
We are cleaning up and making the site more simple and user friendly for new students.

Thank you all, much respect.

The Dark Flow.

well being that a void is unstable and bubbles form.......
and if any of you ever heard my rant on the Space between universes i called Omni space that if you could travel beyond the point of matter in the known universe there would be a vast empty space so vast that entire universes could form and pop with out ever effecting one another ever or rarely......

Well nasa has some news.

The puzzling migration of matter in deep space – dubbed "dark flow" – has been observed at farther distances than ever before, scientists have announced.

Distant galaxy clusters appear to be zooming through space at phenomenal speeds that surpass 1 million mph. The clusters were tracked to 2.5 billion light-years away – twice as far as earlier measurements.

This motion can't be explained by any known cosmic force, the researchers say. They suspect that whatever's tugging the matter may lie beyond our observable universe.

Kashlinsky and colleagues first reported their measurements of the dark flow in 2008. They measured signals of the movement in the leftover light from the Big Bang, thought to have created the universe 13.7 billion years ago. That leftover light is called the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation.

The dark flow appears to be moving in the direction of the southern constellations Centaurus and Hydra.

Over the universe's horizon

The new study is based on a larger data set of about 1,500 galaxy clusters and CMB measurements taken over five years by space and ground-based telescopes. The researchers say their new results strengthen indications that the dark flow is real.

"It looks indeed that the entire observable universe is moving with respect to the CMB radiation," Kashlinsky told SPACE.com. "We can now say that more confidently than our initial supposition."

The researchers think dark flow may be caused by structures that lie beyond the horizon of our own universe. As odd as that may sound, some cosmologists think that our universe is actually only a bubble of space-time that was created during a period of rapid cosmic expansion, called inflation, after the Big Bang. Other bubbles may also have been created where inflation took place at a different rate, and perhaps something in one of the other bubbles is tugging at our universe.

The researchers hope to further test the dark flow using upcoming data expected from the Planck satellite, which launched last year.

Other evidence

Some potential support for the dark flow idea came from an independent study that found a similar motion, albeit in individual galaxies, and not clusters of galaxy, Kashlinsky said.

That team – which includes researchers Richard Watkins of Willamette University in Salem, Ore., Hume Feldman of the University of Kansas, and Michael Hudson of Canada's University of Waterloo – found a sampling of galaxies that also displayed a collective motion, which happened to be in the same direction as the dark flow measured by Kashlinsky and team.

"We see the flow in the same direction, no question about it," Feldman said. "That is very odd, it's not what you would expect."

But Feldman cautioned that his observations were not necessarily of the same dark flow, since they were on a completely different scale of relatively nearby objects.

"There's nothing in our flow that says that their flow does not exist," Feldman said. "On the other hand, there's nothing in our flow that says their flow does exist, except that it's in the same direction."

Kashlinsky and colleagues' new findings are detailed in the March 20 issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

http://www.space.com/common/media/video/player.php?videoRef=SP_100317_dark-flow
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/distant-dark-flow-100317.html

so in short there is something outside the universe pulling dark matter and matter in one direction
something in another bubble so massive and dense effecting the matter/dark matter of another universe.

guess i was right about omni space. lol

Slow/Fast Twitch Muscle Fibre

Some people can put on relatively short but fast bursts of speed or power. Other people seem to be able to run, bike or swim forever and experience little fatigue. So what makes each group different?

Skeletal muscle is made up of bunches of fibres. These fibres can be categorized into two main groups; slow twitch (Type I or ST) and fast twitch (Type II or FT). Fast twitch muscle fibre can be split again into FT-A and FT-B.

Slow Twitch:
Slow twitch muscle fibres contain many enzymes involved in oxidative pathways so they are efficient at using oxygen. Fuel is stored in the form of triglycerides. ST fibres contract slowly and are highly resistant to fatigue so are used during aerobic activities. Most daily activities (walking and maintaining posture) rely on ST fibres.

Fast Twitch B:
FT-B fibres contain many glycolytic enzymes and few oxidative enzymes. Glycogen is their main source of fuel; a by product of breaking down the glycogen is lactic acid. FT fibres contract very quickly but have a low resistance to fatigue. They are used to provide a lot of force in short bursts like jumping.

Fast Twitch A:
FT-A fibres can create energy both aerobically (like ST) and an-aerobically (like FT-2). Because of this they have a moderate resistance to fatigue and are used during prolonged anaerobic activities.

Characteristics of the Three Muscle Fibre Types:

Slow Twitch (ST)	Fast Twitch A (FT-A)	Fast Twitch B (FT-B)
Contraction time	Slow Fast Very fast
Size of motor neuron	Small Large Very large
Resistance to fatigue	High Intermediate Low
Activity used for	Aerobic Long term anaerobic	Short term anaerobic
Force production	Low High Very high
Mitochondrial density	High High Low
Capillary density	High Intermediate Low
Oxidative capacity	High High Low
Glycolytic capacity	Low High High
Major storage fuel	Triglycerides CP, Glycogen CP, Glycogen

Force Produced:
If a fibre is in dynamic contraction (either lengthening or shortening) then FT fibres produce more force than ST fibres. However, if the force is tested under conditions where the length of the muscle doesn’t change during contraction (isometric conditions) then both FT and ST fibres produce the same amount of force. Also, a greater percentage of FT fibres produce a greater force and therefore the velocity one can achieve also increases.

Activating Fibres:
ST muscle fibres are always activated first. If the intensity of the activity remains low no other fibres will be activated. But if more energy is required FT-A will become active followed by FT-B if it is required.

Determining Dominant Fibre Type:
To directly determine the composition of fibres in a person a sample must be taken and examined under a microscope. Indirectly one can figure out whether they have more than 50% FT or ST using weights. To do this you must know your 1RM (the greatest amount of weight you can lift only once). Then take 80% of that weight and see how many times it can be lifted. Fewer than 7 reps means that there is likely more than 50% FT muscle fibre. Greater than 12 or 12 itself indicates the muscle group is likely more than 50% ST fibre. There is likely an even proportion of ST and FT fibres if the number of reps lies between 7 and 12.

Performance and Training:
Because the composition of muscle fibre in the body is genetically determined athletes tend to fall into the sports that best support their genetic build. Endurance athletes (eg - marathon runners) have a greater proportion of ST fibres and sprinters, jumpers, shot putters etc have a greater proportion of FT fibres. This is why a sprinter can run faster; their muscles produce a greater force. It has been shown that Olympic sprinters possess about 80 percent FT fibre, while marathon runners tend to possess 80 percent ST fibre.

Training will not change FT to ST or vice-versa. One can however train to increase size of either type of fibre. For example if a person has a 50/50 mix of FT and ST and undergoes strength training the mix is still 50/50 but the FT fibres will hypertrophy (get larger) and the ST fibres will atrophy (get smaller). This changes the cross sectional area of the muscle, from say 60% FT (FT fibres usually have a larger cross-sectional area than ST fibres) and 40% ST, to 70% FT and 30% ST. Strength is increased but endurance is decreased. Similarly endurance training will increase the area of muscle that is ST and decrease the area that is FT; increasing endurance and decreasing strength.

Keep in mind, as mentioned earlier, that elite/Olympic athletes can have a very different genetic composition of fibres than the average person. However, fibre type composition is only part of an athlete's success; by itself it does not equate to good performance. Mental preparedness, proper nutrition and hydration, sleep patterns, and training and conditioning also play a big role in being an athlete and, by following the principles of conditioning, any athlete can improve their performance.

charles atlas

Charles Atlas, born Angelo Siciliano (October 30, 1892,[1] Acri, Italy – December 23, 1972, Long Beach, New York[2]), was the developer of a bodybuilding method and its associated exercise program that was best known for a landmark advertising campaign featuring Atlas's name and likeness; it has been described as one of the longest-lasting and most memorable ad campaigns of all time.[3]
According to Atlas, he trained himself to develop his body from that of a "scrawny weakling", eventually becoming the most popular muscleman of his day. He took the name "Charles Atlas" after a friend told him he resembled the statue of Atlas on top of a hotel in Coney Island[2] and legally changed his name in 1922. His company, Charles Atlas Ltd., was founded in 1929 and, as of 2009, continues to market a fitness program for the "97-pound weakling." The company is now owned by Jeffrey C. Hogue

Like tens of thousands of young men and boys before him, Tom Manfre first caught sight of Charles Atlas in the back pages of the comic books he read so voraciously. With a sculpted chest, leopard briefs girdling his hips, a piercing look on his granite-jawed face, Atlas seemed to be jabbing his finger at Manfre as he commanded: "Let Me Prove in 7 Days That I Can Make You a New Man!"

It was 1947, Manfre was 23 years old, and the man in the leopard-pattern briefs was the toast of New York City. He'd helped President Franklin Roosevelt celebrate his birthday at the Waldorf Astoria hotel. He cavorted on radio with Fred Allen and Eddie Cantor and on television with Bob Hope and Garry Moore. He stripped off his shirt at a Paris dinner party tossed by the designer Elsa Schiaparelli. His measurements had been entombed in the famous Crypt of Civilization, the repository of records at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta intended for unsealing in the year 8113. Scarcely a day went by that a newspaper columnist didn't feature an item about Atlas—dropping by to bend a couple of railroad spikes, perhaps, or ripping a Manhattan phone book in half.

Manfre stuck a check for $29.95 in the mail and got back a 12-lesson course of exercises the author called Dynamic-Tension. For 90 days, Manfre did the prescribed squats and leg-raises and sit-ups. He followed the tips on sleep and nutrition. He remembered to chew his food slowly. Pleased with the results, he sent a photograph of his new and improved body to Atlas and was invited to drop by to meet the man himself.

"I felt like a kid in a candy store," Manfre, 86, says today. "I was thrilled! He put an arm around me and said, ‘God was good to me, and I'm sure he'll be good to you.'" When Manfre won the Mr. World contest six years later, the first person he called to thank was Charles Atlas.

Manfre was not alone in his gratitude. During Atlas' heyday—the 1930s and '40s—two dozen women worked eight-hour days to open and file the letters that poured into his downtown Manhattan office. Grateful knock-kneed boys with scrawny arms and sunken chests reported that their lives had been turned around. King George VI of England signed up. Boxers and bodybuilders gave Dynamic-Tension a whirl. Mahatma Gandhi—Gandhi!—wrote to inquire about the course. A 1999 A&E biography, "Charles Atlas: Modern Day Hercules," included testimonials from Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jake "Body by Jake" Steinfeld.

This year marks the 80th that Atlas' mail-order company has been in business. Atlas himself is long gone—he died in 1972—and Charles Atlas Ltd. now operates out of a combined shrine, archive and office over a nail salon in the northern New Jersey town of Harrington Park. But the Internet has given Dynamic-Tension a new life. From all over the world, letters and e-mails continue to pour in, testament to one of the most successful fitness programs ever devised. And to its mythic founder.

The man who made history marketing his muscles was an unlikely hero. Born in Acri, a tiny town in southern Italy, he arrived with his parents at Ellis Island in 1903 at age 10. His name was Angelo Siciliano, and he spoke not a word of English.

He didn't look like much, either. Skinny and slope-shouldered, feeble and often ill, he was picked on by bullies in the Brooklyn neighborhood where his family had settled, and his own uncle beat him for getting into fights. He found little refuge at Coney Island Beach, where a hunky lifeguard kicked sand in his face and a girlfriend sighed when the 97-pound Atlas swore revenge.

On a visit to the Brooklyn Museum, he saw statuary depicting Hercules, Apollo and Zeus. That, and Coney Island's side show, got him thinking. Body building was then a fringe pursuit, its practitioners consigned to the freak tents beside the fat lady and the sword swallower. Alone at the top was Eugen Sandow, a Prussian strongman discovered by showman Florenz Ziegfeld. Sandow toured vaude ville theaters, lifting ponies and popping chains with his chest. Atlas pasted a photo of Sandow on his dresser mirror and, hoping to transform his own body, spent months sweating away at home with a series of makeshift weights, ropes and elastic grips. The results were disappointing, but on a visit to the Bronx Zoo one day he had an epiphany, or so he would recall in his biography Yours in Perfect Manhood, by Charles Gaines and George Butler. Watching a lion stretch, he thought to himself, "Does this old gentleman have any barbells, any exercisers?...And it came over me....He's been pitting one muscle against another!"

Brute size was all well and good, but proportions were what mattered to Atlas. "I don't stress the matter of chest expansion," he told Family Circle magazine in 1939, "because it is not important....I've had a fellow in here who could blow himself up like a frog...but it was just a trick, and he was underdeveloped in every way." Nor did big biceps impress Atlas as much as well-developed abs. In one of his lessons, he wrote, "It is all very well to have strong arms and a grip of steel, but of what use are these unless the abdominal area is in perfect condition?" The paragraph concludes: "The rectus abdomus muscles will stand out firmly like a washboard."

His values were curiously old-fashioned, even quaint. Manfre was always surprised by Atlas' interest in his life. "He'd constantly ask me questions. ‘What did you do yesterday? How's it going? Did you go to church? I've got a new exercise you should add in.'" That Atlas never stopped working to improve his exercise program also impressed Manfre. "He kept studying animals," says Manfre, "and not just four-legged ones. He'd say, ‘See that bird fly? See how he flaps his wings to push out his chest?' I'd sit there amazed."

Kardashev scale

Kardashev scale

is a method of measuring a civilization's level of technological advancement.

# Type I — a civilization that is able to harness all of the power available on a single planet — has approximately 1016 or 1017 W available. Earth specifically has an available power of 1.74 × 1017 W (174 petawatts, see Earth's energy budget). Kardashev's original definition was 4 × 1012 W — a "technological level close to the level presently attained on earth" ("presently" meaning 1964).

Methods by which a civilization could feasibly advance to Type I:

* Large scale application of fusion power. Type I implies the conversion of about 5 kg of matter to energy per second. This can be achieved by fusing approximately 1,000 kg of hydrogen into helium each second, a rate roughly equivalent to 3 × 1010 kg/year. A cubic km of water contains about 1011 kg of hydrogen, and the Earth's oceans contain about 1.3 × 109 cubic km of water. So this rate of consumption can be sustained over geological time scales.

* Antimatter production is still beyond our civilization's ability to utilize as a power source, but any civilization with the technological ability to produce or collect anti-matter in large quantities cheaply, would have a mechanism to produce power on a scale several factors above our current level of technology.

* Solar energy — converting sunlight into electricity by either solar cells or indirectly through wind and hydroelectric power. Currently, there is no known way for human civilization to successfully utilize the equivalent of the Earth's total absorbed solar energy without completely coating the surface with man-made structures, which is presently not feasible. However, if a civilization constructed very large space-based power satellites, Type I power levels might be achievable.

# Type II — a civilization that is able to harness all of the power available from a single star, approximately 4 × 1026 W. Again, this figure is variable; the Sun outputs approximately 3.86 × 1026 W. Kardashev's original definition was also 4 × 1026 W.

* A Dyson sphere or Dyson swarm and similar constructs are hypothetical megastructures originally described by Freeman Dyson as a system of orbiting solar power satellites meant to completely enclose a star and capture most or all of its energy output.[13]

* Perhaps a more exotic means to generate usable energy would be to feed a stellar mass into a black hole, and collect photons emitted by the accretion disc.[14][15] Less exotic would be simply to capture photons already escaping from the accretion disc, reducing a black hole's angular momentum; known as the Penrose process.
* In sufficiently large number of stellar systems, absorbing a small but significant fraction of the output of each individual star.

Type III — a civilization that is able to harness all of the power available from a single galaxy, approximately 4 × 1037 W. This figure is extremely variable, since galaxies vary widely in size; the stated figure is the approximate power output of the Milky Way. Kardashev's original definition was also 4 × 1037 W.[/color]
Type III civilizations might use the same techniques employed by a Type II civilization, but applied to all of the stars of one or more galaxies individually. They may also be able to tap into the energy produced from a supermassive black hole which are believed to exist at the center of most galaxies.

Type IV level which controls the energy output of the visible universe; this is within a few orders of magnitude of 1045 W. Such a civilization approaches or surpasses the limits of speculation based on current scientific understanding, and may not be possible.

In the Star Trek universe, the race known as the Q Continuum are beings of unlimited power that have existed since the begining of the universe. They can alter reality in any way conceivable, at any point in time. They have no apparent malice or bias toward lower lifeforms and, cannot influence one another.

There are many historical examples of human civilization undergoing large-scale transitions, such as the Industrial Revolution. The transition between Kardashev scale levels could potentially represent similarly dramatic periods of social upheaval, since they entail surpassing the hard limits of the resources available in a civilization's existing territory. A common speculationsuggests that the transition from Type 0 to Type I might carry a strong risk of self-destruction since, in some scenario, there would no longer be room for further expansion on the civilization's home planet, similar to a Malthusian catastrophe. Excessive use of energy without adequate disposal of heat, for example, could plausibly make the planet of a civilization approaching Type I unsuitable to the biology of the dominant life-forms and their food sources. If Earth is an example, then sea temperatures in excess of 35 °C would jeopardize marine life and make the cooling of mammals to temperatures suitable for their metabolism difficult if not impossible. Of course, these theoretical speculations may not become problems in reality thanks to the application of future engineering and technology.
Andre Ward (born February 23, 1984) is an American boxer, and is the current WBA World Super Middleweight champion. As an amateur Ward won Gold at the 2004 Summer Olympics in the light heavyweight division, the first American boxing gold in 8 years. He qualified for the Olympic Games by ending up in second place at the 1st AIBA American 2004 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Tijuana, Mexico.
Ward made his pro debut on December 18, 2004 by scoring a second round TKO over Chris Molina. Ward dropped Molina in the first round with a straight left cross to the chin that drove him into the ropes and down on the second strand. Ward, continued to dominate the action and dropped Molina for the second and final time with another sharp left hook to the jaw. The referee waved off the bout at 40 seconds of the second round.

On February 5, 2005 Ward fought in his second pro fight against Kenny Kost. Ward overcame a rocky second round, in which he was hurt by a left hook, to win by unanimous decision. Ward defeated Roy Ashworth on April 7, 2005 by disqualification, after Ashworth committed numerous fouls on Ward, including shoving Ward to the canvas and hitting him in the back of his head.

Ward won his next three fights, all by knockout, before going up against Darnell Boone on November 19, 2005. Ward was knocked down for the first time in his career in round four. Despite the knockdown, Ward went on to win by unanimous decision.

After the fight with Boone, Ward went on to win his next six fights, including TKO victories over undefeated Andy Kolle and Francisco Diaz. On November 16, 2007 Ward beat undefeated Roger Cantrell by fifth round TKO in Saint Lucia.

On March 20, 2008, at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, Ward defeated Rubin Williams by seventh round TKO. Ward hit Williams with jabs and straight left hands almost at will, opening a bad cut over Williams' left eye in the process. The cut would force the referee to stop the fight.

Ward faced Jerson Ravelo on June 20, 2008, in Georgetown, Cayman Islands, for the vacant WBO NABO super middleweight title. Ward dominated Ravelo for the majority of the fight en route to a TKO victory in the eighth round, claiming the vacant WBO NABO super middleweight title.

On May 16, 2009, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, Ward defeated Edison Miranda by unanimous decision. The scores were 116-112, 119-109, 119-109 for Ward. Ward showed he had an inside game as well as an outside game. Miranda couldn't stay up with Ward's versatility around the ring.

On September 12, 2009, at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California, Ward defeated Shelby Pudwill by TKO in the 3rd round.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder link to genius

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder link to genius

Attention-deficit disorders may be the spark behind creative geniuses such as Byron, Picasso and even Kurt Cobain, claims a psychiatrist.
Professor Michael Fitzgerald believes people with ADHD have the ability to "hyper-focus" on things of interest.
The Trinity College Dublin academic said lives of high achievers such as Jules Verne and Mark Twain seemed to suggest the disorder.
However, a psychologist said only mild ADHD could possibly offer a benefit.
ADHD is generally regarded as a disadvantage in life, with its characteristic traits of inattentiveness leading to problems at school and home.
However, Professor Fitzgerald told the annual meeting of the Royal College of Psychiatry's Faculty of Academic Psychiatry that it could actually prove an advantage.

Clearly ADHD is not a guarantee of genius, but the focused work-rate that it produces may enable creative genius to flourish
Professor Michael Fitzgerald, Trinity College Dublin
He claimed that it was possible to identify ADHD traits in a list of historical figures, also including Sir Walter Raleigh, Thomas Edison, Oscar Wilde, James Dean, Clark Gable and even Che Guevara.
"The same genes that are involved in ADHD can also be associated with risk-taking behaviour.
"While these urges can be problematic or even self-destructive - occasionally leading people into delinquency, addiction, or crime, they can also lead to earth-shattering breakthroughs in the fields of the arts, science, and exploration."

He said that Kurt Cobain, the former Nirvana songwriter, had an "amazing ability" to focus on writing music.
"People with ADHD have symptoms of inattentiveness, but they often also have a capacity to hyper-focus on a narrow area that is of particular interest to them.
"Clearly ADHD is not a guarantee of genius, but the focused work-rate that it produces may enable creative genius to flourish."
'Reckless character'

While there are potential pitfalls of diagnosis by historical evidence, Professor Fitzgerald, pointed to clues such as Lord Byron's "turbulent life", with evidence that he got into trouble at school, and criminal behaviour as an adult.

Sir Walter Raleigh was a "reckless character", but this, and his "insatiable quest for new stimulation" had made him into a famous soldier, adventurer and explorer, said Professor Fitzgerald.
This is not the first time that the academic has turned to the history books for examples of famous figures who may have been shaped by psychiatric disorders.
He suggested in a 2004 book that Mozart, George Orwell and Andy Warhol all fitted established criteria for a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder.

Professor Barbara Sahakian, a clinical psychologist at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, said that it would be difficult to make a positive diagnosis of ADHD unless written documentation was very detailed.
"You would need a diary which basically answered all the questions I'd need to ask if the person was in front of me in the consulting room."
She said that while mild ADHD traits could possibly be an advantage, more severe versions of the disorder could be far too debilitating for the individual.

this is something many of us already knew along time ago....

Hapkido

Hapkido is a Korean martial art. It is derived from the Japanese form Daito-ryu-Aikijujutsu. Initially Choi Yong Sul reintroduced it and developed it as Hapki Yusul but his students added to his techniques and included kicks and strikes to create the modern Hapkido. The idea was to get the perfect balance of defence and attack within each technique. Hapkido translates as “the way to harmony through body and mind coordination.” It is an eclectic art that has similarities and roots in many Korean and Japanese martial arts:

Aikido – Hapkido and Aikido have the common origin of Daito-ryu-Aikijujutsu. Both arts teach students to receive attacks with minimum resistance, move past it and add to it. They show similarities in the circular motion of techniques, joint locks and throws.

Hapkido includes jabs and punches found in boxing.

Judo – The idea of taking control of the opponents balance and throwing using the legs is incorporated into Hapkido.

Ju-Jitsu – close range techniques of these two arts are very similar. Joint manipulation and pressure point application helps practitioners to control opponents regardless of their size and strength.

Many of Hapkido’s kicks and stikes come from Karate and are taught so the student can fight at any range.

Kumbo – the basics of the Korean form of Kendo is taught to black belt students to improve their awareness of distance, timing and entry. These are essential in both armed and unarmed combat.

As students advance they are taught the smaller, circular hand techniques and body shifting as a means of close in self-defence and counter-attacks that can be found in KungFu.

Hapkido also employs some of the Ninjitsu joint locking and throwing techniques. Students are also taught how to use everyday items as weapons.

As another Korean martial art most of the kicks in Hapkido come from Tae Kwon Do. However, low kicks and knee attacks are used more than high kicks as students learn for self-defense situations. After becoming an Olympic sport Tae Kwon Do dropped some of the self defence techniques it previously shared with Hapkido.

Principles:
Hapkido's main principles are Yoo (flowing like water), Won (the circle, the perfect geometric shape), Hwa (harmony in no resistance). It also considers Seang-Ni-Hak (physiology), Meom (body), Shin (mind) and Shim-Ni-Hak (psychology).

Weapons:
Students learn to defend against a variety of weapons including knives, canes, rope, the staff (short, mid and long length), swords and other bladed weapons. They are also taught how to use everyday items as weapons of their own.

Throwing with joint manipulation

Techniques:
Hapkido uses a wide range of striking, joint lock, pinning and throwing techniques to avoid any narrow specialization. Grappling is also taught but the emphasis is on escaping to regain footing.

Footwork is essential and used with hand strikes and low level kicks when at a further range to bridge the distance. Once at a closer range the practitioner takes control of the opponents balance to apply a joint lock or throw the opponent depending on the situation.

Hapkido makes use of people's pressure points which can be struck to produce unconsciousness or immobility of limbs or manipulated to create pain. Using pressure points allows one to unbalance their opponent more easily.

Strikes and punches with both hands and elbows are taught. "Live hand" strike is also part of the Hapkido syllabus. It is a strike that focuses energy to the hand and allows the practitioner to produce energy and internal strikes to the opponent. Usually hand strikes are used to weaken the opponent's balance before joint locking or throwing but sometimes are used as a finishing technique.

Although Hapkido contains kicks from Karate and Tae Kwon Do the emphasis of these movements is still on Won; the circle. There are many sweeping or hooking kicks and there is greater commitment to the attack than to quick retraction of the leg. As students advance they learn blade kicks which are sweeping kicks that make contact with pressure points on the opponents body.

La Destreza

La Destreza
At the end of the 16th Century, one of the deadliest, most elegant, and certainly most misunderstood forms of rapier combat was being perfected.

Intense training develops lightning reflexes, calm demeanor and analysis of every situation. Correct execution of the Mysterious Circle's highly refined techniques was believed, by practitioners, to all but guarantee victory. Angulation, deflection and the tremendous power generated by body torque are merely some of its secrets.

By constantly menacing with the point, the centerline is maintained and the body offers the smallest vulnerable target. To reach his foe, the opponent must remove the threatening blade. The Spanish practitioner coolly waited for his man to commit his body and weapon to an attack. This he avoided by stepping forward or back on an angle then countered with superior blade leverage facilitated by his knowledge of geometry and physics, to control the central line. He simply angled his body and blade to shift center and establish a new line that he could dominate. The attacker literally impaled himself on the Spaniard's extended point.

The master of the Circle seemed to know his opponent's next move as if by magic. The "magic" was the result of exacting footwork, body angulation and a manipulation of the blade that limited the opponent's options. He guided him towards predictable responses by offering fewer opportunities, at the same time baiting him to attack the openings selected by you. This made it relatively easy to avoid or counter his offense and launch a fatal response.

The skills, both mental and physical developed by training on the Circle impact every weapon the practitioner employs or encounters, including swords, pole arms, daggers, cloaks, whips and empty hands.

Japanese Vengeance Balloon Bombs

The Vengeance Bombs (also known as Fu-Go or Fire Balloons) were made from mulberry paper, glued together with potato flour and filled with hydrogen. They were spherical balloons with a diameter of 33 feet (about 10m) and of the possible 1000 pounds (453.6 kg) of weight they could carry 33 where dedicated to an anti-personnel fragment bomb. Using an altimeter the Japanese programmed the balloons to release hydrogen if they got to over 38,000 feet and drop sand bags if they fell below 30,000 feet.

To get all the way from Japan to the USA the balloons where released in fall and winter when the jet stream across the Pacific Ocean was strongest. Being pulled along in the stream it took the balloons 3-4 days to make the journey across the Pacific. Once all the sand bags ran out two incendiary bombs were dropped the next time the altimeter registered the balloon as to low. Finally the bomb was dropped as, by the Japanese's calculation, it should be over the US by then. At this time a 64 foot fuse connecting the balloon to its cargo was ignited and about 82 minutes later the balloon itself became a flying fireball. Sometimes the balloon descended with the bomb and burnt up or failed to ignite at all.

The Japanese undertook the balloon bomb project in retaliation to the “Doolittle raid” (when American pilots bombed targets in Tokyo in 1942). Though it took 2 years to make the 9000 balloons they finally launched in November 1944. The goal was to cause fear among the public and government by executing such a long ranged attack and to divert the attention of the armed forces from the war by causing forest fires, destroying buildings and causing harm on home soil. Some of the bombs drifted over Canada and even made it near the Mexico border.

Though the bombs caused little damage they had the potential to be very effective and were shot down when sighted before reaching the mainland. There was also a concern that the Japanese might initiate biological or chemical warfare using the balloons. So, to discourage the launch of more balloons, the US applied censorship on the media; asking them not to mention any balloon bomb incidents. It worked rather well, the Japanese didn't hear of many successful bombings and this helped lead to them giving up on the project. Censorship was lifted to alert the public to the danger of the balloons when, in May 1945, six people (five children and a woman) were killed after they tried to pull a balloon from a tree. They are the only know casualties of the balloon bombs and the “only known fatalities on the U.S mainland from enemy attack during World War II.”

In April 1945 two of the three plants producing hydrogen for the balloons were bombed and Japan gave up on the project. Since then 325 remains have been found all over North America and Canada. However it is estimated that 1000 of the 9000 balloons launched made it across the Pacific. In 1955 one was found unexploded but still dangerous even after ten year of corrosion. The most recent discovery of balloon bomb remains was in 1992. There is the possibility that more unexploded bombs or remains lie in the deserts, forests, lakes and mountains of North America and have simply not been discovered yet.

Flow

Once upon a time in ancient Japan, a young man was studying martial arts under a famous teacher. Every day the young man would practice in a courtyard along with the other students. One day, as the master watched, he could see that the other students were consistently interfering with the young man’s technique. Sensing the student’s frustration, the master approached the student and tapped him on the shoulder. “What is wrong?” inquired the teacher. “I cannot execute my technique and I do not understand why,” replied the student. “This is because you do not understand harmony. Please follow me,” said the master. Leaving the practice hall, the master and student walked a short distance into the woods until they came upon a stream. After standing silently beside the streambed for a few minutes, the master spoke. “Look at the water,” he instructed. “It does not slam into the rocks and stop out of frustration, but instead flows around them and continues down the stream. Become like the water and you will understand harmony.” Soon, the student learned to move and flow like the stream, and none of the other students could keep him from executing his techniques.
